Tiivistelmä
The idea for a handbook for parents of immigrant children came to us when we conducted training in different Finnish daycares and realized the difficulties that children of immigrant background could face, especially in their early stage, and the challenges their parents encounter when preparing them to start a new journey. The handbook aims to provide parents with the necessary information to support their children in transitioning smoothly into a new environment. The handbook’s purpose is also to foster collaboration between parents and early childhood education and care (ECEC) teachers via mutual understanding.
To understand the needs of immigrant parents towards this kind of handbook, a survey questionnaire was sent to the parents, an interview with 8 ECEC personnel, including the daycare’s manager, assistant manager, and teachers, and an interview with a parent was conducted. The results from 5 respondents and sharing from interview participants have provided a more in-depth understanding of the parent's needs, which are inconsistent with the theoretical study.
The handbook was created with the main content including the basic principles and values of the Finnish ECEC system; guidance for guardians to support children’s language development; guidance for the daily activities in the daycare; and updating the essential contact information related to children's healthcare and social services in Turku and the collaboration between ECEC staff and parents/families.
