This thesis was written on behalf of the Project Logistics team at Wärtsilä Marine. The work explored the possibility of reducing costs and lead times by booking courier deliveries directly, without using an external forwarding agent.
The aim was to determine whether direct bookings could be a more cost-effective and time-saving alternative for smaller shipments.
The study was conducted using a quantitative method, where the costs and delivery times of shipments from May to August 2024 were analyzed. Shipment data and prices from the most commonly used forwarding agent were retrieved from the company’s ERP system and compared with three courier companies: DHL, Blue Water Shipping, and TNT. The data was processed in Excel to allow for a structured cost comparison. In addition, interviews were conducted with two system providers, Logtrade and Ingrid, to explore the possibilities for system integration of courier bookings.
The results show that booking directly with couriers could reduce both costs and handling time. The most cost-effective solution was identified as booking directly with one specific courier company. The study also presents an alternative to system investment: hiring a dedicated person to manage bookings, which could lead to immediate savings. Utöver detta genomfördes intervjuer med två systemleverantörer, Logtrade och Ingrid, för att utreda möjligheterna till systemintegration för kurirbokningar.
