Tiivistelmä
The importance of social health is significant in health care but hardly recognized. Understanding social health is essential for nursing professionals, as its' absence could lead to poor holistic care. Seinäjoki University of Applied Sciences (SeAMK) offers many opportunities for quality nursing education. This thesis explores how social health is integrated into nursing studies and fields, based on nursing students’ opinions.
The purpose of this thesis is to find out the experiences that nursing students at SeAMK see in integrating social health into healthcare. The goal is to raise awareness of the importance of social health in nursing studies and in the nursing field in general. Based on the results collected, strategies can be explored to raise awareness and promote understanding of social health among nursing students and the public.
The thesis implemented a qualitative study with inductive content analysis. Nursing students at SeAMK answered four open-ended questions. From 31 (N=31) gathered answers, 27 (n=27) contained useful, collectible data for the thesis. The results show that social health plays a significant role in nursing students’ lives. Most answers were received from third year nursing students (61.3%), which shows nursing education and practice in nursing field giving different perspectives to social health being a part of their studies and holistic care-giving of a patient. Nursing students recognize the two most highlighted findings, interpersonal connections and self-enhancement. The responses were gathered anonymously and ethically, complete table visible at appendices.
Further research is needed to enhance awareness and expand knowledge of social health. Understanding its role in nursing education and practice could benefit the growth and development of nursing fields.
