Tiivistelmä
An arteriovenous fistula is one of the safest, most efficient, and long-term vascular access for the haemodialysis patient. Self-care is needed for the patient who is receiving haemodialysis to increase patency, reduce complications, reduce surgical intervention and hospitalisation, reduce financial burden and improve quality of life. The purpose of this study was to increase awareness and preserve the AV Fistula, reduce the AV fistula complications, and assess the self-care knowledge and behaviour of the AV fistula among undergoing haemodialysis patients.

The relevant information was gathered from the computerised databases CINAHL, MEDLINE, and PUBMED for more relevant articles. Firstly, the Authors identified the keywords through MeSH from the academic library site of the university and then used those relevant keywords to find the relevant articles. Articles were collected from 2014 to 2024 related to the topic of self-care of AV fistula among haemodialysis patients. The authors read those collected articles carefully, analysed the data and illustrated the relevant information in the thesis. This descriptive literature review study showed that Self-empowerment, management of signs and symptoms and prevention of complications were the main self-care actions for AV fistula care among haemodialysis patients.

In conclusion, the Patient should have a self-empowering nature to implement the care actions. Similarly, the patient should inspect the signs of infection and hematoma and check the thrill thrice a day. Avoiding physical trauma and sleeping over the fistula hand, managing the fluid and weight to avoid intradialytic hypotension were the most important self-care actions for AV fistula care.
