My bachelor’s thesis is primarily based on “Private Lives”, an inter-disciplinary exhibition project planned and executed by me, which consists of five paintings and a stop-motion video art. The content of “Private Lives” revolves around the topic of the distortion of female persona in Iranian contemporary paintings, and it aims at redefining the representation of the Iranian woman’s true persona.
In this thesis, I will firstly attempt to provide a brief analysis of the contributing social and political factors that effect this identity distortion in Iranian visual arts, and in the following section I will present my works, describe the process of their creation, and elaborate on their connections with the concept of misrepresentation of female identity.
As a means of discovering this topic, I will seek to acquire satisfactory answers to the following question: To what extent does political and social censorship impact the portrayal of women’s image in the Iranian art domains? And what is the role of western orientalist gaze in such self-made distortions?
Both above questions will be elaborated on in reference to Michel Foucault’s concept of power, and my own artworks will function as a visual counteract of Foucault’s ideology in relation to identity censorship.
