Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder that impacts patients’ quality of life. Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) is a surgical intervention that is used to alleviate motor symptoms in PD patients. The purpose of this Bachelor’s thesis is to conduct a literature review about the experiences of the Parkinson’s Disease patients that underwent with Deep Brain Stimulation.
The objective for this thesis is to observe and discuss about the experiences and effects that occur in the Parkinson’s disease patients which use the Deep Brain Stimulation procedure as an intervention. This aims to analyze and synthesize findings from existing research to understand the lived experiences of PD patients after undergoing DBS, with a particular focus on its effects on daily life, emotional well-being, and long-term functionality.
A review of peer-reviewed literature published between 2014 and 2024 was conducted. The findings indicate that while many patients experience symptom relief and enhanced quality of life, others face challenges related to lifestyle adjustments and post-surgical side effects. The post-surgery phase varies among individuals, with some requiring additional rehabilitation and psychological support.
Understanding the diverse experiences of PD patients undergoing DBS will enable healthcare providers to enhance patient education, offer better support, and improve long-term management strategies.
