Tiivistelmä
This thesis was written in partnership with a power-voltage cable production company, NKT. Due to emerging trends and growing demand, NKT has shown interest in implementing a sustainability assessment for early-stage R&D projects of product development. To achieve this, the thesis aims to analyse the current system and make improvements for sustainability adaptions into the process. This is achieved by creating a functional adaptation model through action-based methods.
The research investigated the current need for a sustainability assessment to justify its implementation in the R&D department and industry. It demonstrated emerging trends for R&D-related sustainability assessments and their high impact value. The next part of the research analyzed the current NKT sustainability strategy. The thesis then delved into the product development process of NKT. Due to confidentiality, an abbreviation and generalization of the Stage Gate process was analyzed and used for the implementation proposition. General development methods of a sustainability assessment and further analysis of indicators of use in this particular industry were included.
This resulted in a comprehensive proposition of adapted assessment methods, examples, and important steps to consider for an implementation. Due to the scope and boundaries set, no particular life-cycle assessment was presented. Lastly, further points for future inquiry were presented to address the constant need for change and adaptation of the concept of sustainability. To conclude, this thesis provides a comprehensive understanding and knowledge for a smooth and well-thought-out development of a sustainability assessment in the early-stage R&D processes.
