This thesis explores the growing phenomenon of pet transportation by private jet, focusing on its comparative advantages over commercial airline travel. As pet ownership continues to rise globally, traditional air travel has often failed to meet the welfare needs of companion animals, particularly due to restrictive policies and stressful conditions in commercial aviation. In response, private aviation services have increasingly tailored their offerings to accommodate pets more comfortably, safely, and flexibly.
The research examines the regulatory landscape that governs air-based pet transport, including international standards such as IATA’s Live Animal Regulations, European Union pet travel policies, and country-specific requirements like those in the United Kingdom. Furthermore, ethical concerns regarding pet welfare, especially for vulnerable breeds and animals traveling in cargo, are critically discussed. The study also considers new business models, such as shared charters and empty-leg flights, that are reshaping the accessibility of private pet travel.
Using a mixed-methods approach, the research combines data from pet owner surveys and structured interviews with private jet operators. The findings suggest a clear preference for private jet travel among pet owners seeking safety, transparency, and comfort, though financial constraints remain a limiting factor. The study contributes valuable insights into consumer preferences, regulatory frameworks, and service innovations in the evolving market for pet-friendly air transportation.
