This thesis investigates the role of stage design in shaping the audience experience at live concerts, focusing on how various elements like lighting, set construction, video content, and special effects impact emotional engagement. The study was motivated by the significant influence of stage design on live performances, which has evolved from simple backdrops to complex multimedia productions that define the identity of both artists and their concerts.
This evolution is particularly pronounced in genres like metal, pop, and electronic music, where the use of technology has transformed stage aesthetics and audience expectations. The thesis aims to bridge the gap between theoretical understanding and practical application, providing insights to enhance concert experiences.
The research employed a qualitative approach, combining literature review, observation, and case studies to capture the practical aspects of stage design. Observations were conducted at live performances, and benchmarking was applied to compare different stage setups across genres. The analysis included in-depth case studies of selected concerts, focusing on the interplay between visual design and emotional response. These case studies provided real-world examples of how artists utilize technology and creative stage design to deepen audience connection and reinforce thematic elements in their performances.
The findings reveal that successful stage design not only supports the music but also creates a narrative space that enhances the emotional impact of the performance. Elements like large-scale screens, synchronized lighting, and immersive special effects were identified as central for building atmosphere and audience immersion. Additionally, the thesis highlights the importance of aligning stage design with the artist's brand and message, demonstrating that thoughtful design choices can significantly elevate the live concert experience. The study concludes by discussing practical implications for event organizers and suggesting areas for further research, including the potential for integrating emerging technologies like augmented reality and AI into future concert designs.
