Tiivistelmä
This thesis investigates sustainability investment in the bamboo industry, especially in Vietnam, by using the case study of EcoBambu Bamboo Joint Stock Company. The study is conducted in the context of the global shift to sustainable practices, due to increasing environmental concerns, including climate change, water and air pollution, erosion, landslides... Bamboo, a renewable resource, has significant potential to address these challenges while delivering long-term economic benefits and contributing to climate change mitigation. Therefore, the author aims to explore how sustainability investment principles can be integrated into the bamboo industry in Vietnam, then assess the broader potential of the bamboo industry in this thesis.

The study uses a mixed methods approach, combining qualitative interviews with key stakeholders at EcoBambu with data collected and adapted from industry reports and market analysis. In addition, to explore the specifics of the bamboo industry, the author spent time in 2024 to comprehensively assess many bamboo plantation projects in the Central region of Vietnam. This experience offered valuable insights into the key factors driving companies in Vietnam to invest sustainably in the bamboo industry, which include significant potential for carbon sequestration, environmental restoration, financial stability, high return on investment, creating job opportunities, promoting gender equality, and investing in local communities.

Despite its potential, bamboo remains an underutilized resource because of barriers and risks to investment. The author concludes with recommendations for investors on scaling up cultivation areas, increasing market impact, and leveraging carbon credits. Besides, policymakers should streamline land-use regulations, optimize processing facilities and logistics networks, foster public-private partnerships, and support the carbon credit system. These solutions can attract national and international investment strategies, contributing to the development of green finance and sustainable farming practices in Vietnam as a whole.
