Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis was to investigate how cullet glass can be reused to create sustainable products in artisanal glassblowing. The objective was to investigate the applicability of kiln forming techniques for the reuse of industrial glass waste in small-scale workshops. The thesis was conducted as a practical investigation in collaboration with the glass studio Mafka & Alakoski. The objective is to reduce material waste while maintaining quality and functionality in glassblowing production.
The theoretical approach was based on circular economy principles and life-cycle analysis methods applied to the glass industry. Data collection included interviews with experts, artists, and glass technicians, on-site observations, and documentation of experimental processes. Several prototypes were developed and analysed using different combinations of cullet’s and kiln programs. The results were evaluated in terms of material compatibility, process efficiency, and energy consumption.
The results showed that cullet glass can be effectively reintegrated into artisanal glassblowing by adapting traditional techniques. Four functional prototypes were produced, confirming the technical and aesthetic feasibility of the method. The study concluded that this practice helps reduce the environmental impact of small glass workshops. The results encourage the broader application of circular economy design strategies in the glassblowing sector
