This thesis explores the logistical, legal and procedural complexities of the international importation of extra virgin olive oil (EVOO) from Fraga, Spain, to the port of Veracruz, Mexico. With global demand for premium olive oil on the rise, due to consumer health concerns and expanding culinary markets, Mexico represents a growing opportunity for Spanish exporters. However, entering this market involves dealing with a complex framework of customs requirements, sanitary regulations, trade agreements and transportation strategies.
The main objective of this study is to develop a comprehensive, academic-based business manual to guide importers through each critical phase of the EVOO supply chain. This includes identifying and interpreting the regulatory frameworks of Mexico and the European Union, describing the required documentation, analysing logistical decisions such as bulk versus packaged transport, and evaluating customs procedures in both countries. The thesis is based on both qualitative and quantitative research methods, combining direct information from supply chain actors including freight forwarders, customs brokers, logistics providers and distributors with regulatory publications and current academic sources.
Finally, the manual serves as a practical tool for importers, offering structured guidance to ensure legal compliance, optimize logistical operations and reduce financial and procedural risks. By following the recommendations described and understanding the key variables that influence the international olive oil trade, companies can improve their competitiveness and facilitate a smoother entry into the Mexican market.
