Det ekonomiska läget i världen har under de senaste åren varit turbulent till följd av globala oroligheter såsom Covid-19 utbrottet år 2020 och senare Ukrainakonflikten, specifikt Rysslands invasion av Donbasområdet i februari 2022. Händelser som dessa har satt spänning på den globala handeln, vilket syns som nedgångar i global BNP, störningar i globala försörjningskedjor, ökade transport- och råvarupriser och till följd av dessa en minskad industriproduktion.
Arbetets syfte var att analysera 17 metallföretag inom Österbotten och ta fram nyckeltal för att utvärdera den österbottniska metallindustrins ekonomiska hälsa och utveckling i jämförelse med hela metallindustrin i Finland, samt utvärdera hur företagen klarat sig genom de svåra och oförutsägbara ekonomiska åren som gått.
Undersökningen utfördes genom att utifrån företagens bokslut från åren 2019–2023 framställa nyckeltal relevanta för att ge en bild av branschens ekonomiska läge. Nyckeltalen analyserades kvantitativt sida vid sida med nyckeltal över metallindustrin i landet hämtade från Statistikcentralens databaser och jämfördes med färdigt framtagna referensvärden från forskningslitteraturen.
Resultatet visar att den österbottniska metallindustrin utvecklats positivt trots de svåra åren. Företagen påvisar en övergripande god lönsamhet som över perioden varit jämförbar med eller bättre än branschgenomsnittet i landet. De globala oroligheternas inverkan på näringslivet märks i branschens utveckling, men resultaten tyder på en god återhämtning och fortsatt hälsosam tillväxt. The state of the global economy has for the last decade been uncertain and volatile following factors like the Covid-19 pandemic and the war in Ukraine, specifically Russia’s full-scale invasion of the Donbas-area in February 2022. Such events have put immense strain on international trade which has led to the decline in global GDP, supply chain disruptions and the rise in transport costs and material prices which in turn have led to a decrease in industry production.
The aim of this thesis was to analyze 17 within the metal manufacturing industry in the Ostrobothnia region based on financial ratios. By analyzing these ratios, the thesis aimed to evaluate the financial health and development of the industry in the region in comparison to the industry on a nationwide scale and to evaluate how the industry held up throughout the aforementioned difficult times.
The analysis was performed based on financial ratios that were deemed relevant to the aim of the thesis. The ratios were calculated based on the companies’ financial reports from the years 2019–2023. An overview of the industry’s financial situation was created through quantitative analysis of the calculated ratios, comparison with ratios for the nationwide industry retrieved from Tilastokeskus databases and referential values retrieved from literature.
The results show that the metal-industry in the Ostrobothnia region is of good financial health and has seen an overall positive evolution over the analyzed period. The companies analyzed show a good level of profitability that over the entire period has been at least comparable to, but largely better than in the nationwide industry. The financial effect of the challenging economic landscape is visible in the trends, but the results point towards a quick recovery and continued healthy growth.
