Tiivistelmä
The care of children who are dying is emotionally and professionally challenging for nurses and requires effective coping strategies. This study explored the mechanisms employed by nurses in coping with the psychological and ethical issues of pediatric palliative care. The purpose was to determine coping strategies that enhance resilience and uphold compassionate care. A systematic literature review was conducted utilizing databases such as CINAHL and PubMed to identify relevant peer-reviewed articles from 2014 to 2024. Data were analyzed using an inductive content analysis approach to categorize coping strategies. Findings revealed three primary coping mechanisms: emotional coping through empathy and self-reflection, social support through teamwork and formal counseling, and professional development coping strategies, including ongoing education and self-care activities. Peer support and formal debriefing were found to be critical in lessening emotional upset, while professional training facilitated the nurses' ability to manage stress. Institutional support systems were, however, often nonexistent, leading nurses to develop autonomous coping mechanisms. The study concludes that a combination of personal, social, and professional coping mechanisms is required for pediatric palliative care nurses. The integration of resilience training and formal emotional support within healthcare organizations will prevent burnout and enhance the quality of care. Further studies are recommended to evaluate the impact of these interventions on nurse well-being and patient outcomes over the long term.
