Tiivistelmä
The objective of this thesis, foreign entrepreneurship in Kokkola, Finland, was to examine the complex dynamics of foreign-owned businesses with particular emphasis on challenges they face, opportunities they discover, and effectiveness of support systems that are in place. The thesis aimed to provide detailed insights into how foreign entrepreneurs manage to overcome cultural, legal, and financial hurdles while embarking on establishing and operating businesses in a Finnish medium-sized city. The theoretical framework employed concepts of foreign entrepreneurship, cultural integration, and regional business development.

The thesis used a qualitative method, carrying out semi-structured interviews among twelve foreign businessmen from various sectors. Results showed that while language, adaptation challenges, and complex bureaucratic requirements were significant problems, entrepreneurs could successfully identify niche market opportunities and capitalize on strong support from communities. The thesis emphasized how successful businesspeople tapped cultural diversity benefits and established useful strategies for business adaptation, such as extensive market research and building relationships with customers. Support networks, such as the Starttiraha program and business development organizations, gave important support, although accessibility problems and language limitations restricted their efficacy.

The thesis concluded that it is vital to fortify support systems with improved language services, simplified administration, and increasing networking possibilities for promoting successful foreign entrepreneurship in Kokkola. Recommendations include making multilingual publications, having diverse policies for small businesses, and better-structured networking forums. This thesis is helpful in suggesting recommendations for policymakers and support bodies who wish to make the entrepreneurial environment more diverse and supportive for regional Finnish cities.
