This thesis explores storyboarding with Easy Language. The focus of this study was on finding out how conventional storyboarding principles should be applied and altered when creating an Easy Language animation. The goal was to find a good balance between basic storyboarding and Easy Language guidelines and compare that to the storyboards made for an Easy Language series created for YLE. The series is called Mesi ja Otso and it is aimed for children ages 5 – 6. It revolves around moral and ethical questions while remaining fun and entertaining.
Having a variety of shots and scenes is important when creating an interesting storyboard. At the same time, maintaining clear imagery that supports the viewer’s understanding of the story well enough is needed for the material to follow the requirements of Easy Language.
More than ten percent of the population in Finland need Easy Language in their everyday lives. As this group of people keeps growing, the need for Easy Language materials also grows. When it comes to translating materials from standard language to Easy Language, informative materials are prioritised for the sake of accessibility, while other types of content are often overlooked. This has led to very little entertainment targeted at those who use Easy Language. By studying how storyboarding practices should be changed when creating Easy Language animation, this thesis aims to make future Easy Language animation production more approachable and to aid Easy Language’s growth in the field of entertainment and animation.
