This thesis investigates the historical evolution of recording technology and its profound influence on modern record production, focusing specifically on the emergence of choice overload as a problem. By tracing the progression from the phonograph to contemporary digital audio workstations (DAWs), the thesis argues that while technological advancements have expanded creative possibilities and flexibility for musicians and producers, they have simultaneously introduced an overwhelming array of options that can impede creativity and productivity.
Drawing on personal insights and established theoretical frameworks, the the-sis evaluates strategies to counteract choice overload, such as pre-production, self-imposed limitations, session templates, structured workflows, and collaboration. It concludes that by adopting deliberate constraints and harnessing emerging tools, such as artificial intelligence, producers can effectively man-age the complexities of modern production environments and fully realize their creative potential.
