Tiivistelmä
Transporting fine art requires an extremely careful and specialized logistics approach, as artworks are often fragile, irreplaceable and highly valuable. This study examines the critical gaps in current art transportation practices and explores how collaboration between logistics providers and art institutions can be improved to reduce risks. Two research questions guided this study: (1) What gaps exist in art transportation practices, and how can they be addressed to reduce risks? (2) How can transportation companies and art galleries work together effectively to ensure mutual understanding regarding the specific needs of transporting works of art? Research employed a qualitative approach based on semi-structured interviews with seven professionals from art institutions and logistics companies, who works with transportation of fine art. Participants shared detailed insights into the logistical, communicational, and organizational challenges they face when transporting artworks. The findings showed that while risk management strategies are widely adopted, communication issues staying due to a lack of standardized terminology and inconsistent coordination practices. The study revealed that an institution’s size and available resources seriously influence its possibility to manage transportation risks effectively. The results highlighted importance of creating standardized communication templates, involving logistics providers early in the planning process, and putting in specialized training for art institution and logistics staff. Future research could expand by studying the application of standardized practices in more diverse geographical and organizational contexts.
