Capitol-elokuvateatterin 1930-luvun tuolin restaurointi

Abstract

Opinnäytetyössä keskityttiin vanhan Capitol-elokuvateatterin tuolin restaurointiin. Kyseinen tuoli oli säilytyksessä Museoviraston Kokoelma- ja konservointikeskuksen varastossa Vantaalla. Restaurointisuunnitelman laatimisen tueksi tehtiin historiantutkimusta tuolin tuntemattoman taustan selvittämiseksi. Tietoa mahdollisesta valmistajasta pyrittiin myös selvittämään vertailemalla tuolia muiden suomalaisten elokuvateattereiden tuoleihin. Tuolin valmistusajankohdan selvittäminen auttoi valitsemaan sopivat materiaalit ja oikeanlaiset työskentelytavat. Materiaaleista otettuja näytteitä tutkittiin mikroskoopin avulla.

Historiantutkimuksen ohella tarkasteltiin art decon ja elokuvateatterien välistä yhteyttä. Art deco hyödynsi teollisuuden kehittyvää tekniikkaa huonekalujen valmistuksessa, ja aikanaan varsin tuore tyylisuunta innosti kokeilunhaluisia arkkitehteja. Capitol elokuvateatterilla oli tärkeä rooli suomalaisen elokuvakulttuurin historiassa, sillä kyseisessä teatterissa esitettiin Suomen ensimmäinen äänielokuva.

Elokuvateatterin tuolia dokumentoidessa huomioon otettiin sen merkittävimmät vauriot. Restaurointia vaativat kohteet löytyivät istuimen huonokuntoisesta joustinjärjestelmästä, selkänojan kuluneesta vanerista, putkirungon ja puisten käsinojien maalipinnoista. Tuolin verhoilussa käytetty vakosametti oli käytössä kulunut ja likainen. Käsinojien ja putkirungon maalikerroksien alta löytyi alkuperäistä maalipintaa, joka otettiin esiin. Selkänojan vaneriin lisättiin viilupaikat. Vaurioitunut joustinjärjestelmä purettiin kokonaan ja istuimen perustus rakennettiin alusta asti. Tuolin restauroinnissa pyrittiin säilyttämään ja hyödyntämään mahdollisimman paljon alkuperäistä materiaalia. Tuolin käyttöiän pidentämiseksi joitakin tärkeitä rakenteita, kuten verhoilun päälliskangas, satulavyöt ja istuimen perustan kerrosmateriaalit korvattiin uusilla.

The objective of this thesis was to restore an old seat from Capitol movie thea tre in Helsinki. The chair in question was stored in the storehouse of the Finn ish Heritage Agency in Vantaa. In order to design a restoration plan, an inves tigation related to the history of the seat was conducted to find more clues about its unknown origins. Information related to a possible maker or designer of the seat was gathered by comparing the seat to other Finnish movie theatre chairs of same time period. Determining the time period when the seat was made aided in choosing the most suitable materials and working methods. Small samples taken from the seat were taken to be examined with a micro scope.

In addition to historical research, it is important to study the close connection between the art deco style and movie theatres. Art deco made great use of evolving industry technology when manufacturing furniture, and the new art movement encouraged eager architects to experiment with new materials and motifs. The Capitol movie theatre also played an important role in Finnish movie culture history being the first theatre in Finland to screen a movie with sound.

The most damaged areas were recorded during documentation of the piece. The different types of damage such as abrasion, flaking and craquelure were visible on areas of both the tubular frame and armrests. There were missing pieces of veneer on the plywood of the backrest and the broken foundation of the seat needed careful restoration. A wine-red corduroy fabric, which was used for upholstery, was dirty and worn down from years of use. Upon further inspection, a second layer of paint was found and eventually stripped to reveal the original coat of paint beneath. The missing pieces of veneer on the plywood were restored. The damaged spring system and the foundation were rebuilt completely. One of the goals in restoring the seat was to preserve as much of the original surface and materials as possible. Materials such as the top covering, jute webbing, and stuffing used in building the foundation were replaced to ensure longevity of the chair.
