Musical themes in film and television

Abstract

This thesis investigated the role of musical themes in film and the methods they support narrative development, emotional engagement, and audience connection. The study focused on key stages of film production – particularly the collaboration between directors and composers – and examined the creative and technical processes that underlie theme composition.

The thesis was carried out through a literature review, analysis of online resources, and two interviews with renowned Bulgarian composers. The data were analysed to identify the qualities that make film music distinctive and to determine how its musical themes can be presented to ensure the best creative results.

The practical section produced three original theme songs for Bulgarian short films by emerging student directors. The thesis findings guided the compositional process and supported it by aligning the music to the director’s vision. It also demonstrated how cooperation shapes the theme development. The results indicate that close collaboration, knowledge of cinematic dramaturgy, and effective use of dynamic contrast are essential for impactful film music themes.
