Tiivistelmä
The objective of this thesis was to utilize The Hero’s Journey to aid artists by analysing it and breaking down how it could be utilized not only as a storytelling tool but also as a flexible framework for understanding and navigating personal progress. This is achieved through close reading mainly the works of Joseph Campbell, but also Christopher Vogler, and Dan Harmon, each presenting different versions of the Hero’s Journey. Analysing each different model and discussing how it can be applied to aid an artist’s creative process instead of only serving as a tool to construct stories.
A simple model based on the Hero’s Journey aimed at aiding creatives was
created based on the analyses. The idea was then tested by writing and sketching a comic and then examining the process through the created model.
The findings suggest that the Hero’s Journey can serve as a helpful tool at
various stages of the creative process before, during, or after a project is done. It may help break down the process into understandable parts and make it easier to deal with problems as they came up or to predict possible problems during the creative process such as art block or burnout.
