Tiivistelmä
This thesis analytically explores the problems and possibilities in the multifaceted world of composing, the inherently experimental nature of music, and how technology has already influenced – and continues to influence the process. It also aims to examine music creation as a process in which both intuition and rationality can be utilized and combined at different stages. The discussion reflects on the work done for the debut album of the band called Haunted Plasma, titled I, and the sixth album by Oranssi Pazuzu, titled Muuntautuja.

Modern composition and music crafting are art forms that involve creating sounds, harmonies, rhythms, and sometimes lyrics. Music is a craft that is often mystified due to its abstract nature. It defies strict rules and definitions, yet remains deeply connected to traditions and influences from earlier music. The modern methods available for composing are virtually limitless, and technological progress has enabled composers to access a wide range of tools that support the composing process and make experimentation more varied. Often a composer also takes on the roles of producer, arranger, and performer, resulting in highly multilayered responsibilities within the field of music creation. Striking a balance between inspiration, vision, execution, exploration, and perspective can be demanding, and switching between these different roles may often feel nearly impossible.

The aim was not to seek a clear separation between these layers or between intuition and rationality, but rather to explore whether being consciously aware of these layers and strategically utilizing them can lead to a more effective workflow in creating new music. Applying these separations in musical thinking proved to be useful in maintaining a more objective perspective for projects that operate on longer time spans. Music genres are not treated as separate categories in this thesis, though broader nature of electronic music is considered, along with various thought processes involved in composing and producing music overall.
