On December 13th 2024, the European Union’s (EU) General Product Safety Regulation (GPSR) became enforceable for all economic operators within the EU. The purpose of this thesis is to detail the steps taken to implement compliance for the Finnish abrasive and power tool company Mirka Ltd with the regulation.
This task includes examining the regulation and distilling the requirements necessary for the products in the portfolio of Mirka, establishing the level of compliance for the product portfolio, implementing the packaging and product changes to those products that require updating in order to be compliant, writing and gathering the risk assessment documents that would be required and finally, ensuring that all of those functions continue in perpetuity.
To achieve these outcomes, leading theories of change management were researched and utilized. A project for implementing GPSR at the client company was undertaken to meet the objective of the thesis. Other areas of re-search included the requirements of the regulation itself and the working level of compliance of the products in Mirka’s product portfolio.
This thesis explores how the effect of the research areas leads to the creation of a cross-functional team who handled the change required to comply with the regulation. The best practices for change management and project leadership were utilized to ensure that the client company complied with the regulation before the deadline.
