Tiivistelmä
Post-operative pain management in pediatric patients presents unique challenges due to developmental, cognitive, and communication differences. This thesis explores the importance of individualized pain assessment and the critical role nurses play in managing pain after surgery. Using evidence from current literature, it highlights the consequences of inadequate pain control, including delayed recovery and increased healthcare costs. The paper emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach combining pharmacological and non-pharmacological methods, stressing the need for age-appropriate pain assessment tools and comprehensive nursing education. Effective pediatric pain management not only improves patient outcomes but also supports holistic, child-centered care.

Post-operative pain management in pediatric patients presents significant clinical and ethical challenges due to developmental, cognitive, and communication differences between children and adults. Pain is a subjective and individual experience, making its assessment particularly complex in non-verbal or younger children. This thesis explores the current strategies and guidelines used in pediatric pain evaluation and highlights the importance of recognizing pain as the "fifth vital sign." Special attention is given to validated pain assessment tools suitable for different age groups, and the consequences of untreated pain, including hormonal stress responses, impaired recovery, and increased risk of chronic pain conditions, are discussed.

The significant role of nurses in pediatric post-operative pain management is emphasized throughout the study. Nurses not only assess and monitor pain but also implement pharmacological and non-pharmacological interventions, educate patients and families, and advocate for effective pain control. Drawing from international recommendations and Finnish practice guidelines, this thesis underscores the need for continuous professional training, interdisciplinary collaboration, and individualized care plans. Effective pain management improves recovery outcomes, reduces hospitalization time, and enhances the overall well-being of pediatric patients and their families.
