Tiivistelmä
The objective of the study is to explore business potential for Finnish companies in fragile contexts of Somalia and Afghanistan. Market entry into these contexts is difficult, however, there is growing interest in their potential.
Theoretically, this study rests on literature on market entry methods as well as risk analysis. It contends that while entry into the markets of fragile contexts is in many ways complicated, the same business principles still apply as in all international business.
The study will be conducted through semi-structured interviews and a questionnaire. It is qualitative in nature.
The working hypothesis of the study was that interest in Afghanistan and Somalia as markets is limited but that there may be potential for some Finnish companies. However, any Finnish company considering entry into the Afghani or the Somali market should carefully consider both the context and its own capability to internationalize and carry risk. In conclusion, although market entry is difficult, there may be potential for some companies.
The study also showed overreliance on services provided by Finnpartnership as risk management for companies interested in the Afghan and Somali markets. The finding, in turn, led to cooperation between Finnpartnership, Finnish Risk Management Association, and SaferGlobe to increase risk management services given to Finnish SMEs.
