Practices and goals of reducing CO2 Emissions in ports

Abstract

This research examines approaches to reducing greenhouse gases (GHG) in ports involved in global trade. A small literature review was conducted to evaluate the current knowledge on this topic, which was then projected to inform later research.

A case study of the Port of Rotterdam (PoR) and the Port of Long Beach was conducted to examine and compare their current approaches and goals for reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The analysis revealed that, while there were similarities, each port had unique strategies shaped by its specific geographical, economic, and regulatory contexts. The PoR, with its strong focus on integrating renewable energy and circular economy principles, contrasts with the Port of Long Beach, which sticks with technological innovation.

This comparative study highlights the challenges and opportunities faced by leading ports in their pursuit of sustainability, offering insights into potential pathways for global port decarbonization. The findings contribute to a more comprehensive understanding of greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction practices in port operations, laying the groundwork for future research and the development of regulations.
