The increasing demand for electric vehicles (EVs) has led to a significant rise in their maritime transportation, posing safety challenges for the shipping industry. This thesis investigates the root causes of fire hazards associated with the transportation of EVs, particularly focusing on the risks posed by lithium-ion batteries during transit. Through a combination of literature review, case studies, and interviews, the study identifies thermal runaway, physical damage, and improper handling as primary ignition risks.
By addressing the complexities of transporting EVs by sea, this study aims to contribute to the development of safer shipping practices. The findings underscore the need for continued innovation and standardized guidelines to ensure the safe and efficient transportation of EVs, safeguarding both maritime assets and environmental sustainability.
