Tiivistelmä
This thesis examined community-based tourism (CBT) and its role in supporting the sustainable development of communities located in the Kathmandu Valley in Nepal. The focus of the research was to determine the impact that tourism has on communities and to identify the barriers to CBT moving forward and opportunities for improvement.
The focus of the study was an exploratory qualitative approach, which consisted of an online survey and an expert interview. The collected data were subjected to descriptive statistics and content analysis.
The findings of the research suggest that tourism has benefits that have the potential to support economically sustainable development through income, job opportunities, pride in culture and heritage, and awareness of the environment. However, it also identified barriers to tourism development with limited support from government agencies, inadequate training opportunities, and inequitable benefit sharing.
This study has concluded that CBT has an impact on sustainable development and provides a foundation for inclusive development, if consequent investment, training, and participatory planning transpire, and the infrastructure could be raised, along with increased participation.
