Tiivistelmä
A social service initiative was launched in 2021 in rural Sri Lanka to provide free treatment for patients who have paralysis, following the findings of a two-year research study conducted by a multidisciplinary medical team. The study revealed that conventional medication was often ineffective in treating many cases of paralysis, which led to the development of an alternative treatment model. The objective was to develop a practical treatment approach while implementing a system for managing patient care in a scalable and efficient manner, thereby supporting sustainable healthcare practices through digital transformation.

An integrated treatment method combining Physiotherapy, Nila therapy, and Ayurvedic oil-based therapies was administered by volunteer doctors and nurses. In parallel, a custom digital system was designed and implemented to handle core aspects of treatment management, including patient scheduling, medication administration, recovery tracking, and resource allocation.

The developed system enabled the digital management of patient records and facilitated remote access to essential clinical data. As demand increased, multiple treatment centres were established across various regions. The system played a central role in supporting distributed care, enabling coordination among medical staff, streamlining operations, and ensuring consistent delivery of treatment protocols.

The implementation demonstrated significant improvements in operational efficiency, patient tracking accuracy, and the coordination of limited resources. The approach also facilitated the collection of structured data across centres, enabling preliminary analytics to be performed for outcome monitoring and service planning.

The initiative evolved into the “Active Plus Physiotherapy and Rehabilitation Centre,” a distributed net-work of facilities offering specialised care for paralysis patients with paralysis. The modular design of the digital system allowed for easy scaling and adaptation. Future development possibilities include the application of advanced data analytics for treatment optimisation and the integration of telemedicine capabilities to extend the reach of services to underserved areas.
