Material Management and Classification

Abstract

This thesis is made on behalf of Wärtsilä Finland, Project Services. The subject of this thesis is material management and classification in a service oriented organization in the company. The purpose of this thesis was to research on how materials could be managed and stored in a more efficient way. The purpose of this thesis was also to investigate the possibility of expanding the amount of classification classes available at design release from services.

The methods used in this thesis were to perform research on the subjects and problem areas find different solutions that are available to implement to the team. The two different problem areas have been approached a little bit differently. For how the materials could be managed in a more efficient way the research has focused on analysing how this problem is managed in different organizations within the company. It has also included in researching potential solutions from outside the company as well to give a wider base to the results. The research on different classification classes that could be used was done by analyzing the own work as a designer as well as the different team members.

The thesis work was performed by deciding on relevant requirements on what was needed for an effective database for the team, as well as in later stages of the work analysing different solutions available. On the classification part the work was done based on the research, deciding on a couple of different possible classes that could be implemented.

The main result related to this thesis was quite expected because of the limited funding available in the team to develop these subjects further. However, the results also showed that there are good databases available that would fulfill all the different requirements if money would not be a big limiting factor. The results also show that there is potential for the implementation of a couple of different new classes to be used at material releases or updates from the service side in Wärtsilä.

Detta examensarbete är utfört på uppdrag av Wärtsilä Finland, Project Services. Ämnet för detta examensarbete är materialhantering och klassificering i en serviceorienterad organisation inom företaget. Syftet med arbetet var att undersöka hur material kan hanteras och lagras på ett mer effektivt sätt. Syftet var också att utreda möjligheten att utöka antalet klassificeringsklasser som finns tillgängliga vid design release från serviceavdelningen.

Metoderna som användes i detta arbete var att genom forskning inom ämnet och problemområden hitta olika lösningar som kan implementeras i teamet. De två olika problemområdena har angreppits på lite olika sätt. För att undersöka hur material kan hanteras mer effektivt har arbetet fokuserat på att analysera hur detta problem hanteras i olika delar av företaget. Det har även innefattat att undersöka potentiella lösningar utanför företaget för att ge ett bredare underlag till resultaten. Forskningen kring olika klassificeringsklasser har genomförts genom att analysera det egna arbetet som designer samt genom att ta del av input från olika teammedlemmar.

Examensarbetet genomfördes genom att först fastställa relevanta krav på vad som behövs för en effektiv databas för teamet, samt i senare skeden analysera olika tillgängliga lösningar. När det gäller klassificeringsdelen genomfördes arbetet genom att, baserat på forskningsresultaten, ta fram ett par olika möjliga klasser som kan implementeras.

Det huvudsakliga resultatet av detta arbete var ganska förväntat, då den begränsade budgeten i teamet utgjorde ett hinder för att utveckla dessa områden vidare. Resultaten visade dock också att det finns bra databaser tillgängliga som skulle kunna uppfylla alla de olika kraven, om inte ekonomin vore en begränsande faktor. Resultaten visar också att det finns potential att implementera ett par nya klassificeringsklasser som kan användas vid materialreleaser eller uppdateringar från serviceavdelningen på Wärtsilä.
