Despite significant advancements in medical interventions, limited attention has been given to addressing or outlining coping strategies for managing breast cancer diagnosis and its treatment.
This thesis explores the coping mechanisms employed by breast cancer patients as they navigate their diagnosis and treatment. Breast cancer remains one of the most prevalent cancers globally. It develops in the breast cells and can manifest through symptoms such as lumps, changes in the breast shape or size, or unusual discharge. Early detection through screening methods such as mammograms significantly improves treatment outcomes. Accordingly, this thesis aimed to identify the coping mechanism breast cancer patients use to manage the challenges posed by the disease`s diagnosis and treatment.
A qualitative research approach was used to address the research questions. This included a comprehensive review of existing literature, followed by an analysis of selected texts using inductive content analysis. Ten peer-reviewed publications from 2020-2025 formed the basis of the study. Through this process, codes were generated, categories were created, and main themes were established.
The findings indicate that, to endure the challenges of a breast cancer diagnosis and treatment, patients benefit from integrating effective coping mechanisms alongside their medical treatment plans.
