A Chief Officer's portfolio of orange juice transport between Ghent, Belgium and Portland, UK The purpose of this thesis is to provide an overview of a round trip between the loading
port of Ghent in Belgium and the discharging port of Portland in the United Kingdom, from
the perspective of a Chief Officer. This report aims to serve as a learning resource for
students and maritime professionals interested in cargo operations on food-grade tankers.
This report documents the voyage from Ghent to Portland and back to Ghent, which took
place from 02.06.2025 to 11.06.2025. It covers cargo operations, maintenance of cargo
equipment, and cargo monitoring throughout the voyage. Due to the small crew size, the
Chief Officer is responsible for—and actively involved in—many of the operational tasks.
Since other juice tankers and terminals use the same cargo operating system, this report
can also serve as a useful preparation guide for new officers joining a juice tanker. The same
system is also widely used in factories around the world.
