Tiivistelmä
The objective of this thesis was to find and gather reliable information to nurses and nursing students about how to effectively help the patient with recovering from different types of traumatic brain injuries. The purpose of this thesis was to provide trustworthy information for nurses, nursing students, and all other healthcare professionals who are working with a patient experiencing traumatic brain injury. The information in this thesis covers nursing care perspectives dur-ing the recovery of a patient with traumatic brain injury.

This thesis is a descriptive literature review of peer-reviewed scientific articles from nursing-specific databases. The search strategy began with the appropriate MeSH terms and the formulation of a research question. The total research re-sults were 373 articles and was finally limited to 7 articles. The analysis process was completed with an inductive analysis method.

The essential results indicated that nurses need to focus on patients’ basic needs, maintain physical and cognitive abilities, increase patient motivation, im-plement adequate timing of treatment and recognize issues with the patient group. When examining the results, all the recommended rehabilitation actions require partially a multiprofessional approach. The findings show that the nurses need to have multifaceted knowledge, skills and experience regarding this pa-tient group. On top of that the nurses need to have a multiprofessional team be-sides them.

The topic is complex, and it is possible that important interventions remain underexplored. More research is needed to develop comprehensive, widely appli-cable guidelines.
