Tiivistelmä
The purpose of this thesis is to create a practical and easy-to-use guide for maritime students and junior officers who are moving from deck crew positions into the role of Second Mate. This transition can feel demanding because the responsibilities increase quickly and the work becomes more independent. To help with this, the thesis gathers the essential duties of a Second Mate and explains them in a clear way that supports learning and confidence during the early stages of the job.
The material for the guide was collected through interviews with experienced officers as well as through my own work experience as a Second Mate. These sources helped identify the areas that new officers often struggle with, such as medical responsibilities, voyage planning, watchkeeping, cargo handling, ballast operations, safety management, and waste-related reporting. All topics are presented with practical examples and are connected to the requirements of IMO conventions, SOLAS, and normal company procedures. (International Maritime Organization, 2020a)
The result is a general guide that aims to make the step from deck crew to junior officer smoother by offering straightforward explanations and advice based on real work situations. The guide supports safer and more efficient operations on board and helps new officers understand what is expected from them when they take on the role.
