This development work explores the role of play based learning in the development of mathematics skills and cognitive development, such as problem solving and logical reasoning, in 4-5 year old children in a medium sized private daycare located in Turku, Finland, where play is an important part of the daily routine.
The development work was completed using a qualitative approach combining educators’ observations and interviews, children’s observations and responses considered during the pilot testing assessment.
The final output of the development work is a guidebook for enhancing the mathematical skills of 4-5 year old children ,and it offers practical insights for the educators when designing curriculum and developing mathematical skills trough play in early childhood education.
