Ötökkähotelli lasten ympäristökasvatuksessa : varhaiskasvatuksen henkilökunnan näkökulma

Abstract

Opinnäytetyön tarkoituksena oli luoda varhaiskasvatuksen henkilökunnalle ympäristökasvatusta tukeva ötökkähotellin rakentamisopas. Tavoitteena oli integroida aiempaa vahvemmin ympäristökasvatusta päiväkodin arkeen. Opinnäytetyön tehtävänä oli luoda opas sekä rakentaa ötökkähotellit lasten kanssa. Opinnäytetyö oli toiminnallinen, ja sen taustalla oli tekijöiden kiinnostus luontoa ja käsillä tekemistä kohtaan. Toimeksiantaja oli Riihimäen kaupungin varhaiskasvatusyksikkö Uunilinnun päiväkoti. Tietoperustaan kuuluivat valtakunnallinen varhaiskasvatussuunnitelma, varhaiskasvatuslaki ja ympäristötutkimukset. Teorian pohjalta tehtiin opas, minkä jälkeen pidettiin toimintapäivä päiväkodilla, jossa rakennettiin ötökkähotellit. Noin kolme viikkoa toimintapäivän jälkeen lähetettiin kysely toiminnasta ja sen integroimisesta päiväkodin arkeen. Kyselyyn vastasi viisi varhaiskasvatuksen työntekijää. Kysely aineisto teemoiteltiin neljään pääteemaan, jotka olivat osallisuus, kiinnostus, tunteet ja tuntemukset sekä kehitysideat. Tulosten perusteella opasta pidettiin käytännöllisenä. Varhaiskasvattajien näkemys lasten kiinnostuksesta ötökkähotellia ja hyönteisiä kohtaan oli ristiriitainen. Osa vastaajista oli sitä mieltä, että lapset olivat kiinnostuneet, osan mielestä lapset eivät kiinnostuneet ja osa ei ollut huomannut vaikutusta lasten kiinnostuksessa. Varhaiskasvattajien kokemus lasten osallisuudesta oli, että lapset eivät pystyneet itse vaikuttamaan toimintaan ja toiminta oli aikuislähtöistä. Positiivisena näyttäytyi lasten innostus toimintapäivänä. Johtopäätöksenä voitiin todeta, että aikuisen kiinnostus hyönteispainotteisen toiminnan järjestämisestä varhaiskasvatuksessa vaikuttaa lasten omaan kiinnostukseen aihetta kohtaan. Tuotoksena valmistui ötökkähotellin rakennusopas ja lasten tekemät ötökkähotellit. Ötökkähotellitoimintaa voisi tehdä kerhomaisesti tai jakaa toimintaa useammalle päivällä, jotta toiminnasta tulee projektimuotoinen. Toimintaa voisi jatkojalostaa varhaiskasvatusyksikössä painottamalla ryhmän lasten yksilöllisiä kiinnostuksen kohteita luonnossa.

The aim of this thesis was to create a digital guide on insect hotels for environmental education in ECEC. The purpose of the guide is to help ECEC staff incorporate environmental education more strongly in the daily activities. The mission of the thesis was to create the digital guide and to organize an insect hotel building day in a local day care centre. The thesis was practice-based and based on the authors’ interest in nature and handcrafting. The commissioner of this thesis was the early childhood education unit Uunilintu daycare centre in Riihimäki. The theoretical framework for the thesis was constructed from the National Core Curriculum for Early Childhood Education and Care, the Early Childhood Education and Care Act and environmental research. The digital guide was developed based on this theoretical framework. The guide acted as the foundation for the insect hotel building day. Three weeks after the building day, the employees were sent an online survey to inquire how well the insect hotels were integrated into the day-to-day activities in the daycare centre. Five employees answered the survey. Based on the received data, four themes emerged: participation, interest, emotions and sensations as well as ideas for further development. The results showed that the guide was found useful. The employees’ thoughts on children’s interest towards insects and the insect hotel were inconsistent. Some found that the children were interested, some thought that they were not interested at all, and some found no change in the children’s interest. In terms of children’s participation, the employees felt that the children could not influence the building day and that the activity was more adult-centred. However, the employees thought that the children had been really excited during the building day. In conclusion, adult’s interest in organising insect-based activities influences children’s own interest and curiosity towards the subject. The product of the thesis was the digital guide and the insect hotels which were made by the children. In future, the insect hotel activity could be implemented as a club activity or extended across several days so that the activity would be more project-like. The activity could be further developed in the daycare centre by focusing on the children’s individual interests in nature.
