Tiivistelmä
Patients with end-stage renal disease receiving haemodialysis require long-term treatment and lifestyle adjustments, making patient participation essential for improving clinical outcomes and quality of life. Nurses play a critical role in fostering patient involvement through education, communication, and shared decision-making. However, barriers such as hierarchical healthcare structures, communication gaps, and limited interdisciplinary collaboration often hinder effective participation.

This thesis has carried out a descriptive literature review to explore the role of nurses in promoting patient participation in haemodialysis care. A descriptive literature review was conducted following TAMK’s reporting guidelines. Data were retrieved from the Medline (EBSCO) database, and 8 peer-reviewed articles were included for analysis.

The findings indicate that nurses significantly influence patient participation by creating a trustworthy environment, demonstrating empathy, and applying patient-centred approaches. Self-management support, adherence to treatment, and shared decision-making strategies were identified as key facilitators. Educational interventions and evidence-based practices were shown to enhance patient empowerment. Barriers included communication challenges, lack of interdisciplinary cooperation, and structural limitations within healthcare systems.

Nurses are central to promoting patient participation in haemodialysis care. Addressing structural and educational barriers through policy reforms, interdisciplinary collaboration, and continuous training is essential for improving patient outcomes and quality of life.
