Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines the essential milestones of early-stage startup development in Tampere and compares established theoretical frameworks with the real-life experiences of local founders and startup coaches. The study integrates principles from the Lean Startup methodology, the Customer Development model, and the Business Model Canvas to create a milestone-based framework that reflects both theoretical guidance and the practical realities of the Tampere startup ecosystem.

The research adopts a qualitative, multiple case study approach, using five semi-structured interviews with three startup founders and two ecosystem coaches. The findings reveal that early-stage development is nonlinear and iterative, driven by continuous experimentation, customer engagement, and learning loops. Although founders rarely apply Lean Startup principles explicitly, many of their practices align closely with these theories.

The study also identifies patterns specific to the Tampere context, including a tendency toward emphasis on product development and overbuilding, as well as the strategic importance of bootstrapping and transitioning to early revenue generation. Common challenges include inconsistent customer feedback loops, skill gaps, resource constraints, and difficulties with pivot timing. Key success factors highlighted by both founders and coaches include adaptability, perseverance, customer focus, and strong team cohesion.

The resulting milestone framework provides practical value for founders, coaches, and ecosystem players by offering a clear yet flexible structure for managing uncertainty, aligning support services, and improving the overall effectiveness of startup development in Tampere. The study’s qualitative nature, small sample size, and rapidly evolving startup environment present limitations, suggesting opportunities for broader, more extensive research in the future.
