Tiivistelmä
This thesis presents the redesign and development of the official web site of the Pakistan Institute of Trade and Development (PITAD), that is functioning under the Ministry of Commerce, Government of Pakistan. This redesigned project focused on modernizing organization's online presence by improving usability, accessibility and information architecture while integrating Digital Library (DL) and Learning Management System (LMS).
Assigned and awarded by the United Nations, the author served as a UN appointed consultant and Project Manager responsible for ensuring that all the design and technical standards met institutional and international requirements. The website was redesigned with Figma for prototyping and later developed in WordPress with full compliance to WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards. The redesign project was carried out between the months of February and October 2025 as part of PITAD's larger digital transformation project, the project will see further refinements and updates in content in collaboration with the technical team.
The thesis followed an iterative design approach that involved a combination of stakeholder feedback (Management staff, Directors and Director General’s), usability testing and continuous improvement to produce a redesigned website that addresses the needs of both the users, the institution and the country in the Trade and Development industry.
The primary objective of this thesis was to redesign the PITAD website based on the modern web standards to better serve the PITAD users all over the country. The previous website was plagued with usability limitations, had a cluttered layout, and had no functionality to meet the need of PITAD staff, executives, and stakeholders. The proposed redesign addressed these problems by merging the Digital Library (DL) and the Learning Management System (LMS) and ensuring that the new site is user friendly, responsive, and accessible to all user groups.
Evaluation results state that the redesigned website had significantly improved usability, satisfaction of users and operational efficiency on all fronts. The results have been evaluated through feedback from stakeholders, and usability testing and performance audits conducted on the redesigned website. Overall, this project supports, PITAD strategic goal of promoting trade and development through digital transformation, contributing to broader knowledge sharing and capacity building across public sector in Pakistan.
The project also provides replicable framework for future government website redesigns in the country and similar institutional settings at broader level.
