The population of elderly people is increasing exponentially and so is their need for health and wellness services. In addition, medical intervention and non-pharmacological interventions are used to manage symptoms of diseases and maintain functional capacity especially for older people. In this thesis, authors are exploring a non-pharmacological method known as Music therapy in services that are provided for older people. In this thesis, we would explore the impact of music on the well-being of older people receiving health care services, how music is integrated into care services for older people, and how it affects the quality of health. The objective is to increase knowledge on the influence of music in promoting emotional well-being, cognitive, and functional ability of older people. This thesis will explore the importance of music in caring for older people and answer the question of what the role of music is for older people using different services and its perceived impact on their well-being.
The thesis is written based on the descriptive literature review approach. This involves analyses of four main academic databases for earlier research that could provide answers to the research questions. The articles were derived from CINAHL, EBSCO, Pubmed and Medline databases. Thirteen articles were selected because of their significance to the research topic. The analysis of the selected studies created four emerging themes; categories were put under a main category. The result points out the four themes which are effects of music therapy on physiological health, effects of music therapy on psychological health or well-being, effects of music therapy on cognitive, effects of music therapy on quality of life and life satisfaction. In conclusion, the studies that were reviewed utilized music therapy in diverse ways. The music type used, duration of exposure, and type of music therapy differ, nevertheless music therapy shows to be a safe and beneficial non-pharmacological method to improve the well-being of the older population.
