Tiivistelmä
This study responds to the increasing interest of Tampere residents in public art in the surroundings and explores whether working with public art could offer opportunities for artist career development.

The objective of this study was to gather insights from artists, the public, and public art experts to identify which practices could improve public art projects for Tampere tramway and strengthen careers of local artists. For this, qualitative data were collected through expert interviews, an artist qualitative survey, and synthesized with results from a secondary public mixed-method survey for the public art plan for developing the Pirkkala-Linnainmaa tramway line. Thesis research was supported by Tampere Tramway and Frei Zimmer Oy, which is responsible for the art project coordination for the Tampere tramway.

In total, five findings were gained after synthesizing data from all three stake-holder groups. The findings show that public art has an active role in the city, relating to its site and surrounding audience, and offering a set of benefits for the city. Furthermore, it was found that collaboration between artists and the public could take many forms, beyond the creation stage. The final finding demonstrated that for artists to achieve sustainable income with public art, entrepreneurial approaches as well as external support are needed.

The findings of this study are intended to inform future public art projects for both collaboration partners and to contribute to future research on similar studies.
