This thesis explores how social compliance practices influence sustainable supply chain performance in Bangladesh’s ready-made garment sector through a comparative qualitative case study of Debonair Group and Beximco Group. Drawing on stakeholder theory, the study uses semi-structured interviews with internal managers, shop-floor supervisors and an external expert, analyzed via thematic coding. Four themes emerge: compliance as an operational discipline and culture, digital traceability and datadriven compliance, worker voice and welfare, and boundary-spanning environmental governance.
Both firms translate social compliance into measurable social, environmental and economic gains, including lower accident rates, reduced disputes, energy and water savings, less rework and more reliable delivery. Debonair’s participatory, Kaizen-driven routines and blockchain-enabled traceability contrast with Beximco’s enterprise resource planning-embedded key performance indicators, union dialogue and decentralised effluent controls. The thesis positions social compliance as a performance system rather than a tick-box exercise, offering actionable practical guidance for RMG leaders, buyers and policymakers.
