Tiivistelmä
Innovation-driven ecosystems have academic institutions at their core, and interactions between these institutions and other actors shape the nature and future of the ecosystem. Spinouts provide a pathway for the commercialization of intellectual property created and owned by academic institutions. These companies have significant growth potential and influence their ecosystem of origin.

The research aimed to assess economic growth through spinout formation using the Oxford ecosystem as a focal point. Data, observations, and experiences were collected from various actors in the ecosystem, including internal funders (Oxford Science Enterprises), external funders, the university’s technology transfer office (Oxford University Innovation), academic founders, and CEO co-founders.

Questions concerning the requirements for spinout success, their effects on the ecosystem, and the support needed were examined through a qualitative case study approach. Semi-structured interviews were conducted with different actor groups, and the data were analysed using thematic analysis and qualitative content analysis in parallel to identify themes and phenomena relevant to the research questions.

The findings indicated that spinouts contributed positively to the Oxford ecosystem and that Oxford had well-established support structures for spinouts. A need for cultural change toward greater support and acceptance of academic founders, business entrepreneurs, and spinouts in general was identified. Participants highlighted a desire for increased external funding and the presence of large anchor corporates. Concerns were raised regarding whether local infrastructure can keep pace with ecosystem growth.

The methodology chosen was able to answer the research questions and generated significant findings, increasing understanding of actors and constrains within the Oxford ecosystem. Similar studies in other ecosystems would facilitate global comparative analysis. Future research using quantitative methods would enable statistical measurement of economic growth resulting from spinouts.
