Bipolar disorder is a chronic mental health condition that affects a person’s mood, Energy, activities and thoughts, bipolar disorder is characterised by manic and depressive episodes. This thesis explores the role of nurses in caring for individuals with bipolar disorder in community settings through a systematic literature review. The aim of this study is to identify effective nursing interventions that support patients during separate phases of the disorder and to examine the primary challenges nurses meet in community-based care.
The theoretical framework work adopted for this study is the Peplau’s 1952 theory of Interpersonal Relations. A total of 15 recent qualitative studies published between 2016 and 2025 in EBSCO, NOVIA FINNA, CINAHL were analysed using thematic content analysis. The data was analysed, and 3 main themes and 7 sub themes emerged because of this study.
The results highlights that community mental health nurses play a centre role in caring for bipolar patients because they act not only as healthcare professionals but also as educators, advocates, and coordinators of care. Strengthening organisational structures, enhancing training opportunities, and fostering inter-professional collaboration are vital to improving outcomes for individuals living with bipolar disorder.
