Tiivistelmä
The aim of this thesis was to design and develop a real-time production monitoring system using Microsoft Power BI to increase operational efficiency and improve the decision-making process within the commissioning company operating in the security sector. The company manufactures combat equipment and previously depends on manual Excel-based reporting. This limited data accuracy, visibility, and responsiveness. To address these challenges, a solution was developed to automate data collection, merge multiple Excel sources stored in SharePoint, and provide an interactive dashboard for monitoring production performance.
This thesis applied the design thinking methodology, progressing through empathize,
define, ideate, prototype and test phases. Research data were collected through discussions with key users and the final solution displayed key performance indicators (KPIs) such as total production, error count and cycle times. These real-time data support informed decisions. During testing, a temporary data disconnection occurred due to a renamed Excel file, which was successfully resolved by updating the connection and developing clear data-entry instructions for operators.
I removed all identifying information, including names and materials, to protect the
company’s identity at the company’s request. To comply with internal data protection policies only authorized company devices were used. All data connections were secured with company credentials, and all development work was performed within the company’s Microsoft Power BI workspace to ensure data confidentiality.
