Tiivistelmä
The aim of this thesis was to study how international students at Seinäjoki University of
Applied Sciences (SEAMK) experience integration and engage in social connection activities with Finnish students. The thesis was written in collaboration with the SEAMK International Office. The study was motivated by the growing number of international students in Finland and the challenges they face in engaging in meaningful social interaction with Finnish students. The thesis aimed to identify factors influencing integration and to research possible strategies that could support cross-cultural engagement on campus. The study used a mixed-methods approach, collecting both quantitative and qualitative data. The online survey included 32 international students, while the semi-structured group interview included 5 participants. Data from both studies were used to identify common themes related to institutional support, barriers to cross-cultural interaction, and a sense of belonging. Based on the research results, international students recognise challenges in connecting with Finnish students and identify possible reasons for these challenges. Students express a willingness for more structured opportunities to interact with Finnish students, especially during mandatory class activities. The findings suggest a need for intentional, staff-supported activities that encourage crosscultural interaction. This could help foster a stronger sense of belonging, further supporting the institute's internationalisation.
