Tiivistelmä
Nurses experience stress which affects their emotional and psychological wellbeing causing difficulties in performance of duties. The intensity heightens when an adverse event occurs, and some factors which include organisational barriers tend to erode resilience over time making vulnerability to burnout. This study aims to explore burnout prevention and supports for nurses as second victims following adverse events.

A qualitative systematic literature review method was carried out using content analysis to explore the research topic. Appropriate articles were searched between 2017 to July 2025 were identified from (EBSCO) Academic Elite, CINAHL complete and MEDLINE database for this study. Using the Inclusion and exclusion criteria, eight articles from the totality of 22973 were selected by the PRISMA framework. Orem’s Self-Care Deficit Theory of Nursing with Reason’s Swiss Cheese Model were employed that guides the theoretical bases of this study.

The finding creates four themes that strategically promote and empower nurses to respond positively to these incidents so that their well-being can be protected while they discharge their selfless duties. These are namely: training and education, Organisation structure, support and therapy with eleven sub themes. The result reveals that a good support framework is very important and needed by nurses as second victims. Similarly, nurses need to acquire skills to build up their resilience against burnout that occurs following an adverse event (AE). The understanding and effective application of the right strategic response skills to these post-event impacts are critical to burnout.
