Background: Compassionate care is an integral part of the nursing profession in helping nurses to understand patients’ needs better and to give them the best care possible.
Aim: This study aims to bring new insight into the role of compassionate care by nurses and the effect it has on patient outcome in the Intensive Care Unit.
Method: A systematic literature review was conducted from May 2025 to July 2025 with a qualitative approach employed. The study followed the guidelines of the Finnish Advisory Board for Research Integrity in ensuring the ethical and respectful use of data. The data was analysed with the use of content analysis.
Result: Compassionate care roles in the ICU has shown immense value to the improvement of patient outcome. Four themes and their corresponding subthemes were identified. The themes are as follows: Communication as a facilitator of compassionate care, Patient centered care, Nurses’ well-being and satisfaction and Organizational and environmental factors.
Conclusion: This study highlights the positive outcome of compassionate care in conjunction with a holistic approach to care and also advocates the need for nursing leaders in the healthcare organisation to support nurses well-being with a conducive work environment, training leaders regarding compassionate care practices and ensuring nurses can provide compassionate care to patients in the ICU without organisational constraints limiting their abilities.
