Tiivistelmä
Aim: This study systematically assesses evidence on the role of nurses and care strategies in managing COPD patients in home care settings, which shapes and/or orients the knowledge base of nursing practices.
Methods: Qualitative systematic literature review techniques using PRISMA guidelines. Eight peer reviewed studies were selected and thematically analysed. Four databases were accessed, and included studies were published from 2016 to 2025. Supporting theoretical framework grounded by Watson theory.
Results: The eight relevant studies examined various aspects of nurse’s roles in managing and assisting COPD patients in a home care context. Some studies showed that empowerment through education on symptom recognition and self care, along with continuity and accessibility to reduce hospital reliance, and the offering of a sense of security are important nursing care strategies. However, most of the studies emphasized that nurses play a vital role as clinical assessors, relational communicators, and emotional responders.
Conclusion: This study concludes that nurses have a vital and diverse function, acting as both strategic care planners and clinical actors by providing interventions in patients homes. Which improves their health, and lessen dependency on acute hospitalizations, making services provided at home a viable and growing choice for long term chronic care. Further research on how digital tools can improve nurse’s roles and care barriers in home settings is needed.
