Tiivistelmä
This thesis examines how digital self-representation can support the engagement of newcomers in public digital services. An avatar-customization module was designed and implemented for the VINCE mobile application, which supports immigrant integration in Finland. The aim was to develop an inclusive and technically reliable editor while exploring how users choose to represent themselves when given flexible appearance options. Its usability was evaluated in an exploratory study where nineteen student participants completed an avatar-creation task under observation and then answered a short questionnaire. The results indicate that the editor was generally perceived as clear and easy to use even though participants desired more body types, skin tones and stylistic variety. Almost half chose not to create a self-resembling avatar, instead exploring alternative identities. Overall, the lightweight stylized system performed well and was positively received although broader options are needed to better support diverse identity expressions. The study offers a functional prototype for VINCE and an early insight into how users interpret digital self-representation.
